Beginning June 3, 9:00 a.m. we are excited to offer a new class on a biblical approach to parenting children.

Tom and Heidi Hurley are parents of nine children (ages 2 to 19) and have been teaching family discipleship for many years. They bring not only years of practical wisdom, but a firm commitment to Scripture and its consistent application to life; particularly in parenting.

The class deals with the scriptural basis and practical methods for the training and discipline of children, including:

The Scriptural Basis for the Disciplining and Training of Children

The Results of Discipline In The Life Of Your Child

God’s Four Expectations For You As A Parent.

Two Elements of Discipline: The Rod And Grace

An Explanation and Suggested Levels of Discipline

Ten Specific Areas of Wisdom and Life Skills

The Spiritual Development of Your Child

The Transition Years – Adolescence and Beyond

To sign up for the class, click HERE and fill out the form at the bottom of the page

Or

Call the church office: (816) 525-8215

Or

Fill out a communication card in the Worship Center pews and turn it in through the offering plate on any Sunday.

Carefully Think

Read Matthew 5:13-16

How do these verses related to the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12 (particularly how are they related to the last one in 5:10-12)?

Read through the rest of Matthew 5. How would these verses relate to what is found in the remainder of the chapter?

What are the two ways citizens of the kingdom of heaven are like?

What is the point of emphasis of these verses in relation to citizens of the kingdom?

Read Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34; and Colossians 4:6. What do these verses suggest about the purpose of “salt” in relation to our Christianity?

Write down as many beneficial uses of “salt” that can you think of. How would these benefits be instructive about our life as a Christian?

What is the consequence emphasized if our Christianity has lost it’s salty flavor? What is Jesus suggesting by this?

Prayerfully Meditate

Think back on your behavior this week among co-workers, family, and friends. What was absolutely obvious about your relationship to Jesus Christ? What areas of compromise are you aware of?

In what ways could you uniquely and personally be a Christ-centered benefit to your immediate family, surrounding neighbors, co-workers, friends, community, country, our world?

How could our church as a whole be salt to our community – specifically. What would obviously and uniquely point people to our savior in our actions and emphases as a church in the life of our community? What would limit such influence?

Intentionally Act

How does Matthew 5:13 provide any encouragement to you in your life?

Was any sin made obvious to you that you should stop and confess to Christ as you meditated on this passage? Spend a few moments in prayer.

What would be the most obvious area of your behavior, thinking, or general life-style that should be affected so that you were clearly “salt” in your spheres of influence?

Pray for our gathering this Sunday; that it would be beneficial to the church, convicting, comforting, and strengthening to the congregation as a whole. Pray for those who do not know Christ, that they would see who he is and how they should respond to him.

Pray for those leading the service, that they will serve in an edifying way: Dawson Bryant, music; Brett Harris, mid-service prayer and Scripture reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.

Listen to the songs for Sunday (download any you don’t have) and prepare your heart to sing together with the congregation in praise to God and exhortation to one another.

What are the biblical priorities of a Gospel-saturated Mother? Continue reading →

Carefully Think

Read through the following passages and list everything you find that Scripture emphasizes as a woman’s and/or a mother’s priorities: Titus 2:1-5, 1 Timothy 5:14; 1 Peter 3:1-6; Ephesians 5:18-24; Proverbs 31:10-31; 1 Timothy 2:8-15

For every item you listed as a priority, list what you find to be modern challenges to these priorities.

Prayerfully Meditate

How should a husband see these priorities and serve his wife in helping her achieve them?

How could a single man use these priorities when praying about who to date/court/marry?

How could a single woman without children use these priorities to serve other women, pray about her own situation, challenge her own heart’s desires?

If your mother was not driven by these priorities, how could they assist you now in thinking biblically about motherhood? How could they help you in praying for and helping other mothers around you within the church?

For those who are mothers, which one appears most critical for you to apply now?

For those whose children are grown, how could you use these priorities in helping younger mothers or women before marriage and children?

Intentionally Act

Were any sinful tendencies revealed to you about your involvement in your home that you need to confess to God?

For mothers, list out the actions that would be most appropriate for you to take in bringing your life in line with Scripture. Use this list for prayer. Use it in conversation with a godly older mother for input on how to apply them. Begin taking steps not to implement this list in your life.

For those who are not mothers (both women and men), how could these priorities affect you in your situation in life for prayer and behavior? What do you need to change about your expectations? What do you need to change in terms of embracing God’s providence as good in your present situation?

Pray for our service on Sunday to be used of God to encourage where most appropriate, convict where necessary, and unify families.

Pray for those leading the service, that they will be used in a most edifying way: Dawson Bryant, music; Brett Harris, elders’ prayer and Scripture reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.

(June 3-July 15): Using the book by the same title (written by Greg Gilbert), we will explore the essentials of what it means to be a Christian and what is fundamental to Jesus’ message of salvation. If you are new to the faith, interested in learning more about Christianity, or thinking about becoming a member of Summit Woods, this class would benefit you (Rm 101).

Discovery (July 22-August 26): This class is intended for those who have recently joined Summit Woods as members or those contemplating membership. It is a no-obligation, informational class covering topics ranging from what the church is to how we strive to fulfill the church’s biblical mandate at Summit Woods. The material is provided in the class and was written by the elders of Summit Woods. This class is taught by Rob Stouffer and Bret Capranica and will meet in the Pastor-Teacher’s office (Rm 101).

Essentials of Biblical Parenting. The Bible has much to say about parenting. The family is a microcosm of the church and God is deeply interested in how a family functions. Knowing how to apply God’s Word to the challenges of parenting children can be a daunting task in and of itself. This class will provide a biblical framework for how to think about parenting and apply Scripture in very practical ways. Tom Hurley, a father of 9 children, and who has taught this material for many years, will be teaching this class (Rm 502).

Step by Step through the Old Testament. This study continues a survey of the message and important events, people, places, and themes of the Old Testament. By using a self-paced workbook you will build a framework for understanding and interpreting the Old Testament, gain an understanding of the biblical background needed for a lifetime of meaningful study of God’s Word, and respond to God as He speaks to you through His Word. Rick Jones, B. J. Moyer, and Barry Jackson teach this class. They meet in room 404 in the Fellowship Hall.

Old Testament Book Studies. Mike Asher will be teaching through another Old Testament prophetic book. This class is a more in-depth study and discussion and will assist you in growing deeper in your understanding of God’s Word (specific book to be studied will be announced soon). This class meets in room 405 in the Fellowship Hall.

New Testament Books Studies: Gospel of John. Gary Feigly teaches this detailed study of the fourth book of the New Testament. Like the Old Testament Books Studies class, this is more than a general overview of the book, offering a more detailed examination of this book. The class meets in room 507 in the office area.

Knowing God. This class is a deeper theological and practical examination of what Scripture says about who God is, what He is like and how He acts in our world. Topics covered will include: The existence of God, how can we know God, God’s character and attributes, the trinity, and God’s providence. This class uses Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine as a guide. It is taught by Sam Karl and Mark Krystyniak and meets in room 501. by Wayne Grudem

Fundamentals of the Faith. Thirteen lessons that cover the basics of Christianity. This class is for you if you are new to the Christian faith, investigating the basics of Christianity, or would like to renew your understanding and convictions of the fundamentals of the Christian faith. Topics include: Introduction to The Bible, How to Know the Bible, God, The Person of Jesus, The Work of Christ, Salvation, The Person and Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Prayer and the Believer, The Church, Spiritual Gifts, Evangelism and the Believer, Obedience, and God’s Will and Guidance. Dawson Bryant and Toby Sutherland teach this class (Rm 506 – Church Library).

The class will give particular attention to how this book informs believers in applying its content in our contemporary lives. Study guides are provided to students. Steve Burns and David Bolton co-teach this class and they meet in room 305 in the Fellowship Hall.

Carefully Think

Read Matthew 5:1-12 – focus on 5:10-12.

What is persecution? What is Jesus not referring to when bringing up persecution?

Why is persecution listed last in the list of the beatitudes?

Even though 5:11-12 contain the word “blessed,” and refers to persecution, these verses are quite different than the rest of the beatitudes. List all the differences in form and style between 5:11-12 and the rest of the beatitudes. Why these differences?

What are the different forms of persecution one can face (v 11)?

What should be our response to persecution and why (v 12)?

What biblical examples of persecution can you think of?

What is the result of persecution (v 10)? Note the similarity with the result in the first beatitude. What is the difference between this one and the others?

Prayerfully Meditate

For what about your devotion to Jesus and His definition of righteousness have you most recently been persecuted?

How often do you seem to face persecution for your faith? Why? Why not?

Do you think Christians should expect regular persecution? Why or why not?

Is there anything you intentionally hold back in your relationships with friends, at work, at home, etc., because you seek to avoid inevitable persecution? If so, why? If not, how has it provided opportunity to help people understand or be helped by the gospel?

What challenges you most about finding joy in persecution? Why? What would help you to change?

Intentionally Act

In thinking through this passage, what areas of your life seem most obvious and in need of change?

What sins do you need to confess that come to mind from thinking and meditating on this passage?

How could you use this passage this week to encourage someone who is experiencing persecution?

How are you praying for those who are persecuted? How could this passage assist you in praying for them?

Pray for this Sunday’s service, that God will be honored, the saints equipped, and those without Christ convicted of their need.

Pray for those leading the service – that they will be used effectively to edify the body: Dawson Bryant, music; Brett Harris, Scripture Reading and prayer; Bret Capranica, teaching.

Meditate on the lyrics of the songs we will be singing. Download those you do not have so you can listen to them and prepare yourself to sing with the church. How do these songs encourage the truths in Matthew 5:10-12?

Carefully Think

Read Matthew 5:1-9.

Think through how the first six beatitudes impact the seventh one (5:9).

How would you define “peace?”

What is the relationship of the gospel to “peace.” Read Ephesians 2:11-17.

What does it mean to be “sons of God?”

Why would peacemakers be known as God’s children?

Prayerfully Meditate

There are many in our world today who desire peace and work for peace and who are not related to the gospel of Jesus Christ. How do you know that this beatitude refers only to those who are uniquely related to the gospel or how would you argue that this beatitude refers to anyone who makes peace between opposing parties?

What relationships in your personal life are not peaceful? Why? In what ways could you begin to seek to be the peacemaker?

What prevents you from being someone who is characterized by peacemaking?

How does the gospel help make peace between people who are already believers?

Intentionally Act?

Who do you need to avidly work toward peace with? What is keeping you from it that you need to confess to God? What steps could you begin to take to make peace with them?

Are you at peace with God Himself? How do you know? How could you become at peace with Him if you are not?

How do you contribute to making peace within the body of Christ at Summit Woods? How could you do more of it? How could you assist others in pursuing peace with you?

Pray for Sunday’s service, that the Holy Spirit will convict of sin and bring encouragement where most appropriate. Pray that Christians will grow and those without Christ will see their need of Him and be savingly drawn to Christ.

Pray for those who will be leading the service: Dawson Bryant, music; Rob Stouffer, Scripture reading and prayer, Bret Capranica, teaching. Pray they will be used in the most edifying ways to the congregation.

Meditate on the lyrics of the songs we will sing on Sunday. Download any of them that you are unfamiliar with and listen to them throughout the weekend in preparation of singing together as a church.
