Church Covenant
Those desiring to be members of the Church should subscribe and adhere to the responsibilities of membership as outlined in the following Summit Woods Church Membership Covenant:
Acknowledging God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as Savior and Lord, welcoming believer’s baptism by immersion, recognizing that the integrity and vitality of the church is precious to our Lord, and trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit, I say to Summit Woods Baptist Church, you can count on me:
To Exalt the King
“I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever.” – Psalm 145:1
By conducting myself as to bring honor to the Lord and living a life in obedience to the Word of God.
“Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ.” -Philippians 1:27a
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” – James 1:22
By serving the Lord according to church needs and my spiritual gifts.
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” – I Peter 4:10
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” – Romans 12:1
By helping sustain the church through regular giving.
“On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” – I Corinthians 16:2
To Be Equipped by God’s Word
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – II Timothy 3:16-17
By studying and training for growth in understanding, skill, and spirit.
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – II Timothy 2:15
By honoring and defending biblical preaching, teaching, and ministry in the church and in the home.
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” – II Timothy 4:2-5
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” – Deuteronomy 6:6-7
“Bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4b
To Encourage One Another
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” – John 15:12-13
By praying regularly and specifically for the concerns of the church.
“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” – Colossians 4:2
By regular attendance.
“…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:25
By joining in the care of members in the fellowship.
“And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.” – 1 Corinthians 12:26-27
By shunning destructive chatter and placing a high value on unity in the church through addressing grievances biblically.
“For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults;” – 2 Corinthians 12:20
“…with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” – Ephesians 4:2-3
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:29
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. ‘Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 18:15-18
By making myself accountable to the church fellowship. I will resign or accept termination of membership for chronic and unrepentant indifference to the Word of God and this Covenant.
“submitting to one another in the fear of God.” – Ephesians 5:21
“For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore ‘put away from yourselves the evil person.’” – 1 Corinthians 5:12-13
To Extend the Kingdom
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
By being a faithful witness of the gospel in the world.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” – Acts 1:8
By praying for, supporting, participating in world-wide missions.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” – Matthew 28:18-20
